BRM P578 – ‘Old Faithful'
If the V16 symbolised ambition, the P578 delivered fulfilment. Powered by a 1.5-litre eight-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and two valves per cylinder, the car produced 193 bhp at 10,250 rpm — a refined, purposeful evolution of BRM engineering designed not for spectacle, but for sustained success.
This particular chassis became the most celebrated BRM of all: affectionately known as “Old Faithful.” In 1962, with Graham Hill at the wheel, it secured the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship and delivered BRM the Constructors’ World Championship — a landmark achievement for the Bourne-based team.
True to its nickname, Old Faithful earned its reputation through endurance as much as victory. It is one of the highest-mileage cars in Grand Prix history, racing not only for the works team but also for Scuderia Centro-Sud in 1963 and 1965, and for veteran driver Maurice Trintignant in 1964. Over the course of its competitive life, it covered more than 20,000 racing miles — an extraordinary figure for a car of its era.
Where the P15 was daring and complex, the P578 was disciplined and dependable. “Old Faithful” remains the embodiment of BRM at its peak: precise engineering, relentless development, and a championship-winning machine that proved British craftsmanship could conquer the world stage.
