BRM P261 - 1.5 Litre V8

Introduced in 1964, the P261 represented the refinement of BRM’s 1.5-litre Formula One philosophy. Powered by a naturally aspirated BRM V8 with two valves per cylinder and Lucas fuel injection, the engine produced 205 bhp — combining drivability, reliability, and competitive pace in equal measure.

Where earlier BRMs had been bold and uncompromising, the P261 was balanced and beautifully resolved. It enjoyed a remarkably long frontline career, with variants continuing to appear in Formula One World Championship Grands Prix as late as 1968 — a testament to the strength of its original design.

In the hands of works drivers Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart, the P261 secured six World Championship victories and delivered consecutive second-place finishes in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in 1964 and 1965. It was consistently competitive at the very highest level of the sport.

Widely regarded as BRM’s most elegant design, the P261 was more than just beautiful — it was the most successful car in the team’s history, measured by victories and total championship points. It remains the definitive expression of BRM at its competitive peak: precise, purposeful, and unmistakably British.
